This book, first published inwas written about the use of the first standard slide rule made in the United States: a Mannheim-type slide rule /5(14). Slide Rule is Nevil Shute Norway's autobiography about his early years as an aeronautical engineer.

It only briefly touches on his sometimes parallel career as author Nevil Shute. The first half of the book covers his involvement during the late 's up to in a very exciting venture in which England sought to develop its own aeroship along the lines of the success of the German Zeppelins.4/5.

Slide Rule is Shute's personal memoir of the early days of flight and the air industry in Great Britain. His writing is clear and concise, even if it's not meant for people, like myself, who have no familiarity with some of the technical terms. I am more familiar with Mr. Shute's novels, but did enjoy this by: 6.

The book is an important piece of historical and technological research, in which the author includes the history of the slide rule from its beginnings in the 17th century, through its gradual adoption and development worldwide during the 19th and 20th centuries, to its sudden and almost complete demise in the mids/5(5).

November 3, This review refers to "Slide Rule - How to Use It", 3rd edition, reprinted This text is an updated version of Bishop's earlier book, "Practical Use of the Slide Rule - College The slide rule book Series, ".

My review of that text is also on Amazon and can be consulted/5(11). A book from the same era as my recently acquired slide rule was the best introduction I could have asked for.

It gave the foundations necessary for the on-line manuals available for the different rules to make sense. Highly recommended for archeotech or retrocomputing people/5(8). Slide Rule: Autobiography of an Engineer is the partial autobiography of the British novelist Nevil Shute.

It was first published in Slide Rule concentrates on Nevil Shute's work in aviation, ending in when he left the industry. Thompson's original slide rule book was also updated in a The slide rule book edition ("The Standard Manual of the Slide Rule") that many collectors feel is the standard slide rule reference text.

Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the revised edition, but even this early work has a lot going for it. Originally published in German in as the first major book on the history of the slide rule since Florian Cajori's A History of the Logarithmic Slide Rule, this newly revised and translated edition of Slide Rules, A Journey Through Three Centuries, offers readers a fresh, more Continental perspective on this most fascinating of calculating instruments.

This Teach Yourself Book is published to increase the popularity of the slide rule. It is hoped that it may help to remove the fallacy that there is something difficult or even mysterious connected with a simple instrument with which everybody who has calculations to make should be acquainted.

The slide rule was invented around –, shortly after John Napier's publication of the concept of the logarithm. In Edmund Gunter of Oxford developed a calculating device with a single logarithmic scale; with additional measuring tools it could be used to multiply and divide.

William Oughtred made the first slide rule by inscribing logarithms on wood or ivory. Before the invention of the pocket or handheld calculator, the slide rule was a popular tool for calculations. The use of slide rules continued until aboutafter which electronic calculators became more : The slide rule book Bellis.

For example, the book shows you how slide rule can be used to I wish he had talked a little more clearly of the theory but I have to say that already having an understanding of logarithms, this really opened my mind to the possibilities of representing them spatially and /5.

The Use of the SLIDE RULE - Allan R. Cullimore, - This is a hard bound text on the use of the slide rule and only specifically mentions the Mannheim type rules. The book was published by K&E.

The book was published by K&E. Slide rule, a device consisting of graduated scales capable of relative movement, by means of which simple calculations may be carried out mechanically. Typical slide rules contain scales for multiplying, dividing, and extracting square roots, and some also contain scales for.

The slide rule is only labeled with numbers between 1 and Move the decimal point in each number you are multiplying, so they fall between these values. After the problem is complete, we'll move the decimal point in the answer back to the right place, as described at the end of this section%(37).

The Slide Rule The book, written by Florian Cajori, is the standard work on the early history of the slide rule. There is also a version as a Word document which is smaller ( Kb).

More details on the book are given here. : Teach Yourself the Slide Rule. This is almost a complete book on slide rules. Additionally, The slide rule does not tell you where the decimal point is located in the answer.

To do a calculation with a slide rule you reduce all numbers to scientific notation with digits then use the slide rule to perform the basic operations.

In a separate calculation you find the order of magnitude by combining the powers of   In The Sand Dollar and the Slide Rule, Delta Willis explores the relationship between natural forms and human engineering and the beauty, economy, and efficiency in the way birds fly, fish swim, and trees grow.

She then applies this knowledge to design, and how humans can adapt such natural blueprints for everything from ultra-light aircraft to massive skyscrapers/5. The slide rule also does not tell you the sign of your result. Compared to a calculator, a slide rule is severely limited in its accuracy.

You can enter and read a number typically to two or three decimal digits only. Scales. All other scales on a slide rule are referenced to the C and D scales. Following is a list of scales commonly found on. Also, the slide rule is discussed, an invention that was made by Oughtred which provided a mechanical method of finding logarithmic results.

It is mentioned in this book that John Napier was the first person to ever use to the decimal point and comma, however Bartholomaeus Pitiscus was actually the first to do : Mathematician.

This is the second edition of the Oughtred Society Slide Rule Reference Manual, compiled with help from collectors all over the world, and organized, written, photographed and designed by talented volunteers from the Oughtred Society.

An incredibly rich visual publication, it has almost color photos. Simple circular slide rules, used by graphic artists, are proportion wheels used to determine the scale factor necessary to enlarge or reduce an image to fit it into a background or within an illustration.
